Flower Bed Weed Control

Plant Mulch Bed Maintenance Program

New to Terra in 2021 is our comprehensive plan to keep your landscape mulch beds weed free throughout the season. In my experience working at Longwood Gardens, we developed a proactive approach to keeping all the mulched areas pristine throughout the year.  Sure, nothing is 100% in my industry. The best approach starts early in the spring with the use of Sureguard SC, a premium pre-emergent herbicide application. Proper application rates and timing ensure a great result. This application can be done over or under the mulch application. I prefer to apply it over the mulch because sometimes weed seeds can be in your mulch product. This pre-emergent does have a shelf life.  Microbes in the soil break down the herbicide so over time it loses its efficacy. Typically, this happens in 60-90-day period depending on environmental conditions.  Most people believe that a one-time application of a pre-emergent will do the job. That is false!  So, to correct the problem we will be applying a second application of a pre-emergent to all your mulch beds sometime after 70-90 days from the initial application in the spring. This application will reset the barrier to protect your landscaped areas for the rest of the season.

Obviously, nothing is 100%.  Pre-emergent applications control over 100 species of weeds. There are some weeds and grasses that the herbicide just does not control. Examples of these are thistles, tree saplings, grass and kylinga. This is where the use of post emergent herbicides will be use in spot treatments for any weed breakthrough. During these applications, our technicians will spot treat safely in and around all your mulched areas. We also include a hard surface application for the stubborn crack weeds that develop on patios, driveways and curb lines. Below is how the treatment schedule will work.

1. Plant Bed Maintenance: March/April

Application of Freehand to all mulched beds. A post emergent herbicide application to all mulched beds and hard surface areas where weeds have encroached over the winter months.

2. Plant Bed Maintenance: May

A post emergent herbicide application to all mulched beds and hard surface areas.

3. Plant Bed Maintenance: June/July

Application of Freehand to all mulched beds. A post emergent herbicide application to all mulched beds and hard surface areas where weeds have encroached during the summer.

4. Plant Bed Maintenance: August/September

A post emergent herbicide application to all mulched beds and hard surface areas. This will give your property a clean look for the rest of the year.
